Snorkelers from all around the world have selected Xel Ha Natural Park, in the Riviera Maya, Mexico (73 miles South of Cancun), as their favorite place to snorkel, because of infinite variety of colorful fish from the Caribbean take shelter in the placid lagoon where the fresh mixes with the Ocean streams.

Xel Ha Park introduced one of the most innovative and safest diving activities created by Sub Sea Systems, Inc. especially for non swimmers (over eight years old) who want to enjoy the lagoon’s underwater marvels, one the most popular attractions in Xel Ha, Mexico. To walk and breathe that is all you need to have a Sea Trek experience.

Sea Treak consists in a walk on the seabed with a helmet which provides the necessary oxygen without a tank, allowing you to explore the underwater life without giving up your precious vacation in Cancun for specialized training.

With Sea Treak you walk in gravity zero at a depth of approximately 15 ft while surrounded by incredible aquatic life by wearing a specialized Sea Trek® observation helmet. During the adventure, you will have the opportunity to interact with stingrays and other species like horse mackerels and you will learn how to direct the dolphins through a series of hand signals.

The entire Sea Trek activity takes about one hour including a bilingual orientation about Sea Treak which takes approximately 10 minutes and the underwater exploring which takes about 25 minutes.

Sea Treak (Xel Ha Cancun/Riviera Maya) received in 2009, the “Best Sea Trek Operation” award over other locations; in Mexico, Jamaica, Aruba, Turks & Caicos, St Maarten, Grand Caymans, Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, Japan, Malaysia, China and United States.

During the award giving, the chairman of Sub Sea Systems, Inc., Jim Mayfield, stated that Xel Ha Park excelled on customer service quality, guest comments, safety standards, and overall commitment and innovation to provide the highest quality over 40 Sea Trek locations worldwide that competed for this prestigious award.

One of the noted efforts by Xel Ha Park includes hiring a world-renowned marine biologist and stingray behaviorist to train Xel Ha’s staff on the proper handling and treatment of wild stingrays that frequent the Sea Trek site each and every day, Jim Mayfield highlighted.

The “Best Sea Trek Operation” Award was received by Elizabeth Lugo, Executive Director of Xel Ha Park and Rosanna Roth, Water sports Manager, who thanked the honor and highlighted the commitment to keep continuously improving.

Sea Trek is not included on Xel Ha Tours price. For information about Xel Ha tickets and tours, contact a travel agent.

Plan your Easter vacation in Cancun or the Riviera Maya and visit Xel Ha Park, which is located only 122 km away, on the Riviera Maya. You can take a bus towards Tulum and ask the driver to drop you off at Xel Ha Park. Another practical way to go to Xel Ha Park is taking one of the tours to Xel Ha or rent a car. If you come from Cozumel, the only way is by taking the ferry across to Playa del Carmen. The bus station in Playa del Carmen is only two blocks from the pier and there are buses that go straight to Xel Ha Park.

Xel Ha Park is one of the archaeological sites of Mayan civilization, in Mexico. According to Mayan legend, the gods made this site in Mexic0, they called Xel Ha which had the macaw, parrot fish and iguana as its guardians assigned (heaven, earth and water) respectively. During pre-Hispanic times, the Mayans used Xel Ha Park, as an important trading port between the communities of the region.

Today, Xel Ha is a popular water park that offers a wide variety of activities in beautiful natural scenery. The underground river flows through the mangroves into the Bay of Caprices (Bahía de Caprichos) where you can explore its majestic flora and fauna while snorkeling. Beside the river you will find La Piedra del Valor, a five feet stone wall from where the brave jump into the water. You can enjoy the river floating on an inner tube by letting the current take you subtly towards the cove (La Caleta), you can also relax in one of the beaches located on the edge.

Have a lot of fun testing your balance on Trepachanga bridge (50 mts long) that is suspended from two ropes over the River.

Fly like Mo, hanging from a rope into the fresh water as the heaven guardian, the macaw.

Another exciting activity you can do at Xel Ha Park is sailing through the Laguna Negra (Black Lagoon) on a kayak. You can see iguanas, coati, and fish of all sizes and colors through this journey.

Xel Ha natural park also offers a snorkel tour guided by professionals to observe the spectacular marine ecosystem, an unforgettable experience for swimmers of all levels. Another way to enjoy the treasures of the reef is through Snuba and Sea Trek, an innovative tankless diving, walking along the bottom of the underwater world with special equipment. These activities are not included in the tickets to Xel Ha.

Something you cannot skip doing if you visit Xel Ha Park is swimming with dolphins, an unforgettable experience that allows you to swim and interact with these friendly and intelligent mammals. This activity is not included in the tickets to Xel Ha.

You can also enjoy the magic of Xel Ha Park out of the water on the train that takes you on a leisurely ride around and observe the amazing flora and fauna of the jungle. You can also go through the jungle on bikes, which are available on the train station for free.

If you’re traveling to Cancun ask your travel agent for the different Xel Ha Tours available.

Floating Bridge- At the mouth of Xel Ha Natural Park Inlet lies a combined feat of Nature and engineering uniting the main service area to the jungle paths that lead to the river. The Bridge consists of interconnected buoyant sections resting upon the water, thus separating the inlet from the open Caribbean Sea.

Trepachanga- Adventurous visitors will be eager to live a thrilling challenge in Xel Ha Park. There are two platforms constructed more than 50 yards apart from each other, bridged only by parallel ropes that hover above the River below called “Trepachanga”, where crossing is a feat that requires balance, flexibility, coordination and strength to resist not to plunge into the cool waters below.

Cliff of Courage- Another thrilling challenge for the fearless are the “Cliffs of Courage”, along the banks of the Xel Ha Park River, accessible from the water and from the footpath, from which adventure craving visitors show off their diving skills crashing into the turquoise waters below.

Children’s Playground- Xel Ha Park has built a special place for the little ones, keeping in mind their safety, amusement, and education in turn. Children’s area includes a wading pool, a playground area with swings, slides, rope ladders, a rope maze, and a wooden playhouse, painting and drawing activities hosted by the Xel Ha Park skilled staff. There is a hammock resting area for parents very close by.

Mo´s Flight- In Xel Ha Park there are several freshwater pools, fed by underground currents that gradually flow out into the Xel Ha Park River. From a raised rock, a rope swing emulates the flight of the legendary macaw guardian, Mo. A leap off this rock sends one skimming over the deliciously cool, blue surface of the pool, until splashing into waters below.

Tickets to Xel Ha do not include all activities. Ask your Travel Agent for different Xel Ha Tours and schedules.

Jungle Train- The Jungle Train takes you to the beginning of Xel Ha Natural Park River from the main service area running back and forth in brief minutes. It is the fastest, most refreshing, and relaxed way to reach the River on these vehicles which are colorful real works of art.

Bicycles- Another fascinating alternative to reach the Xel Ha Park River’s starting point is the bicycle trail that measures about a kilometer in length. A healthy pace should travel the route in ten to fifteen minutes. Mountain bicycles are available for adults and children with no rental fee. Only a few steps away from the bicycle path, you will see coatis, porcupines, and tzereques approaching shyly to you.

Path of Consciousness- The “Path of consciousness“is located within Xel Ha Park roads, transmitting to all visitors a collection of thoughts and reflections by different authors, inspired in Nature’s beauty. The purpose of this path is that by reading these messages engraved along the path, visitors make consciousness about respect for nature and its conservation.

The organic aesthetic of the sculptures by Martha and David Gerstein was conceived with full respect of textures, shapes and colors already present in Xel Ha Park’s landscape. The inscriptions on each rock are numbered in the Mayan system, and written in Spanish.
